"How do you feel about the new direction that has been taken with Generation X?" Now this discussion fared quite well, keep up the great work guys! Don't be shy now, keep those letters coming! For the previous months discussion on Synch's death and what makes this teen most interesting to you and Generation X, two more letters were sent in, but did not make the posting of last months issue. They are printed at the first of this month's letters pages, sorry about that folks, and thanks for your patience. So now, onto the emails! As always, small disclaimer: the Academy does not necessarily endorse or agree with the opinions in letters printed in our letter pages.
Academy people,
I believe Synch to be a valuable member of the team. He is a good
character but he was never all that interesting. He doesn't have a colorful
past like the rest of the team but that what made him more believable. He
was just a normal kid who turned out to be a mutant. Although I liked the
way that Monet seemed to be trying to steal Everett away from Jubilee I don't
think it was fair to Jubilee. They spent all that time flirting and the
second Monet's out of Penance form she's all over him.
I really hope that the comics go back to the basics though. It was a lot
more interesting to me when they wrote about it being kids in a school
learning about there powers. Ya its fun when they fight but this whole
SHOCKWAVE thing is turning out to be very confusing. If that was their
intent it worked.
I agree with you though. If Synch did die he will not be dead for long.
Its almost impossible for them to kill off someone with out being threatened.
If you don't believe me look at what happened with Blink!
Huzzah! I think you just summed up the life of Synch in the pages of GenX. He was just an average Joe who happened to get incredible powers. There were no secrets he harbored, he was comfortable with his powers and unfortunately, that did not settle well with the folks in comics and so *poof*, he's magically written out.
True, it was not fair to Jubilee. She cared for him so much, but she could never come out and say it to him and once again, *poof*, he cares for someone else now. If she had spoken up, then there could have been a chance that they would be dating as we speak, but that's life I suppose. You can't get everything you wish for, especially when you're not in charge. You can voice your opinion (kindly) however and see what type of response you get, but that can only go so far before it does become threatening or monotonous. In Hama's case, perhaps both. Then again, Blink is getting a new comic....anything can happen I suppose!
hello academy,
I'd like to respond to a letter to put up in issue two that says the gen x TV movie was not on tape in north america, well thats not true my local movie store here in oshawa ontario canada called century home video has a copy of it. Now i don't know why any one would want to see it again it really sucked but any way your best bet to find it is not at blockbuster but at a smaller video store so happy hunting cus the genX tv movie is in north america you just really have to look. Thank you for that information! I had searched around before, but since it was a made-for-tv movie, it should never have been released for home video anyway. Then again, this was aired on FoX and was a comic movie, it is possible that it was available in a "Preview" order magazine in a comic shop and some stores picked it up. Maybe your video store had connections. I had heard rumors before that it was available in a store in England as well. Hmmm...I will double-check with "Preview" and see if they had released copies for sale. If anyone has any idea how these stores ordered a copy to rent out, please let me know!
Hi,
First let me say I love Sugarbombs.com. Now, I can rant.
Why is it that Jubilee can't catch a break?!? First Wolverine leaves her
heartbroken to go walk the Earth, then the X-Men ship her off to
Massachuetts, then she is de-aged to 13 and a half. Next, she comes up with
these brilliant leadership decisions (remember when Synch went off the deep
end or when Emplate had the team tied up and he took her powers she got him
mad and he lost control) but doesn't get credit for them. And what about her
powers, no improvement there. The writers seem to love throwing the poor
girl a bone then snatching it away from her.
The last straw, for me, was when Ev decided to be with Monet....MONET!! Can
someone please ask the writers why they do this to her. Ask them if she is
ever going to be happy, not silly, actually happy or at least at peace. If
not kill her off and let Wolverine go crazy for a book or two, kidding.

Hello Candylynn, I'm sure Nate is very pleased you like the new look he has for his pet project pages! I find it a smooth layout as well. Now why can't Jubilee find a break? With Wolverine, I think that surprised a lot of people, they were well matched and the Wolverine and Jubilee pages out there on the net show that people haven't forgotten the special bond they had. Sometimes good things don't last, but with the recent shake-up talk about cancelling Generation X, I wouldn't be surprised to see those two together again very soon. As with her being shipped off to Generation X, it was quite the opposite, she really wanted to go! She felt she was getting in the way and needed more experience as well as much more control over her powers, so she felt that her best bet was to go to the Massachusetts Acadamy to learn more about her powers so she could become a better X-Man. This was shown in X-Men #318.
Being de-aged to 13 and a half? Now that was just plain stupidity in my opinion. Hehe, same thing happened to Shadowcat and a few others to boot. I wish those at Marvel could remember the stats of all their characters, it would make things a lot less frustrating. She went to Generation X to learn how to control her powers and I agree with you, what happened? Nothing. She does not get the due credit she deserves and barely gets a glimpse of any improvement in her powers, it's a shame to waste such a good character like that. A number of people also disapprove of Ev and M's relationship, but realistically, who better to reform the snobbish Monet than our kind hearted Ev? As for now, unfortunately neither girl will be able to see Ev again due to his heroic attempt to save human lives. A shame to see many good stories and characters go to waste...
Dear Everyone at The Academy,
Hi! First of all, congrats on your site. Its really interesting. Plus, I love the strip and media sections.
Hello and thank you for your compliments on the site. The comic strips and media sections are quite something aren't they? True, Generation X was meant to be a teen comic with a lighter point of view than the X-Men's. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you view the situation) Generation X has gained a gritter feel to match that of the X-Men's success. But does that necessarily work for the teens? With their pending cancellation, unfortunately not. I agree with you on Ev dying by protecting humans from a bomb. I did find that repetitive from other needless deaths (can we say "Blink factor?"). He died defending humans that hated him, but Ellis and Wood could have come up with a bit more creative death than the overused bomb plot. (keep in mind, this is just my opinion on the matter) Jubilee has been growing up as of late, but I'd still like to see a much overdue augmentation or knowledge gain about her powers. Who knows, maybe Jubilee will become more of a figure in a new book? Guess we'll just have to wait and see...
Hello again, Academy staff...
I've read those few letters which had touched on the subjects raised in
the past few months and, since the furor of the previous two story arcs has
subsided now, find myself feeling a little ambiguous about the direction
that GENERATION X has taken. I find the storytelling basically good and
more realistic than what one has seen in the other books (save for a few
nitpicks that I did have), but it isn't too removed from the original
concept of the title either. The question that remains now is "How do they
get there from here?"
I don't expect to see an answer to that one soon, but I have more faith
in Brian Wood's reign for the future now that the Gen-X gang has been fairly
exempt from recent X-overs for almost a year now. I don't think I'll want
to see any more straight "superheroics" until they're fully adjusted to the
more proactive role that Husk and the White Queen are shown pushing them
towards.
One of my pet peeves has always been this world that "fears and hates
mutants and wants them dead", but I'm aware of some of the logic behind it.
Since this is basically the direction in which Ellis, Wood, and Pugh are
going (save, perhaps, for the wanting mutants dead part), I'm at least a bit
reluctant to go further. However, their characterizations are mostly better
than what was done in the previous creative teams (even latter-day
Lobdell-Bachalo was falling apart towards the end) and the graphic take on
Generation X is different in a more "down to earth" sort of way. I'll give
'em one more chance.
That's all I really have to say now.
-- Yujon3D.
Welcome back! I have felt pleased with Wood and Ellis' take on GenX with the exception of Synch dying by a bomb. They are taking GenX a bit farther than they are used to, but do not completly remove themselves from their original goal. The storyline has improved in my opinion, then again, with Hama's run of drunken weasels, dwarves and Token's, how could it fail? *snicker* The storyline is becoming more realistic to fit the "needs" of the readers and is making the teens a little more interesting to boot. The upcoming issues before cancellation will be focusing on a different GenX member each issue and I am looking forward to seeing what makes them tick. I truly wish that Generation X could continue, here's hoping that their characters will be able to migrate to other, or preferably one or two other comics. I have a feeling that I won't see Penance again, darn it! Well, we did what we could and Marvel has made up it's mind, here's hoping that Generation X will live on through the rest of the comics! Huzzah!
That's a wrap for this month's
letters, but here's a little tidbit for the next discussion topic:
With the earth-shaking news that Marvel is cancelling a large chunk of X-Titles, Generation X being the first of the cut, how do you feel about this decision? Do you think it's fair to see the youngest teens disappear because they're not involved in mind-blowing battles every issue? Perhaps disappointed at previous plots that certain writers *cough..Hama!* messed around with? Worried where your team will end up? Or is there something else on your mind....? Got something to say? Send
your message this
away!
