Q and A

Brian Wood has created a strong following over the past few years, with the critically-acclaimed cult-classic Channel Zero and his recent stories with Warren Ellis on Generation X. Recently, I got the opportunity to ask him questions about Generation X, his future-projects, and other things.

First off, "Four Days" has now began and you've got more control of the story of any other arc. How're you liking it?

It's good. Its pretty much exactly the story I wanted to tell with Gen X. I'm glad I got the chance, so at least now I can walk away with a sense of personal accomplishment and feel good about my time spent.

Synch's DeathYou've received a lot of complaints on mailing lists and message boards about killing off Everett. Do you think the complaints are justified?

No.  But I also know that people are gonna bitch and moan and there isn't anything I can do about that.  And even though I executed the storyline, it wqs Warren's initially, so I didn¹t let the abuse and angry emails get to me.

Contrary to what a lot of people think, his death wasn't random, and it wasn't only for shock value.  It served a good purpose, and if they book was continuing, you would be seeing repercussions from his death for years to come. The event was designed to kick the book into a new era, to jumpstart it into a whole new mindset.

In your run, Adrienne was portrayed more diabolical and ruthless than in Faerber's. Was the way she portrayed your or Ellis's idea?

A little of both.  Warren made her mental, but I really expanded on that. Put the dead guy in her bed, had her screwing the students, talking like a psycho.  SO much fun.  I miss her.

What are your thoughts on the cancellation of Generation X?

I think its for the best.  IT may hurt a little at first, but its for the best.  I agree with and support Joey Q's decisions (most of em, anyway).  I think what comes next will be better than Gen X is now.

Recently, you mentioned at PsyComics that you were working on a sequel for Channel Zero. How is it coming along?

Slowly.  I have a lot going on now, and its hard following up something like Channel Zero.

JubileeAny chance we'll see a Channel Zero movie anytime soon?

One can always dream, I suppose.

What other future projects do you have lined up?

Some stuff is being talked about, at Marvel and at DC, but nothing is finalized yet.  I will keep putting out creator owned books through AiT/PlanetLar, though.

What do you prefer, being an artist or writer?

They are so different, its really hard to say.  In a perfect world, I would draw everything I write, but I'm not that good.  I cant draw everything my brain thinks up, so its good to work with an artist that can.

Setting aside the fact that Quesada over-saw the cancellation of Generation X, how's it like working with Quesada now as editor-in-chief rather than Harris?

It effects me not at all, as far as I can tell.  It's sorta cool with Joey, because I am an old fan of his and I see him in bars once in awhile, so he is very friendly and accessible.  We get along well.  I don¹t ever recall meeting Bob Harras.

Do you think there are chances of Generation X perhaps being revived eventually?

If someone pitches a good enough idea to them, I could see a mini happening. But I think it would REALLY have to be a good idea.

What do you think is the greatest comic series you've ever read?

Hate and Preacher tie for #1 with me.  If I REALLY had to choose: Hate. I grew into my 20's with that book.

What'd you think of the X-Men movie?

I had no complaints.  I thought it was great.

Have you begun planning the final issue of Gen X yet?

Yep.  No clues.

Nate1234 became a fan of Generation X ever since early sketches were published in Wizard. He started his own Generation X fan page, Generation neXt, only a few weeks before Andy Bank’s famous Generation X page was shut down about four years ago. Since then he has launched four other websites and collaborated on forming the Academy over two years ago. In his spare time, he enjoys watching movies and being a professional geek.
